While sojourning in Los Angeles, I attended a riotous performance of Celebrity Autobiography at The Broad Stage. During the show, Rita Wilson read aloud from Hedy Lamarr’s infamous autobiography, Ecstasy and Me: My Life As a Woman.
Hedy’s memoir is one of those briliant-but-unintentionally-hilarious books, and Rita’s reading was gut-splittingly funny. But y’know, it got me thinking, “this Lamarr chick is really on to something.”

For all you young ‘uns: Hedy Lamarr was a Golden Age Hollywood starlet who enjoyed a torrid career in the 30s, 40s and 50s. She was stunning. Striking. Prone to inelegant divorces. And above all — a straight-shooting hedonist. According to Wikipedia, she also “co-invented an early technique for spread spectrum communications, a key to many forms of wireless communication.”
New hero? Pretty much.

See kids, I’ve been a full-time freelancer for precisely 83 days. In that time, I’ve been on an entrepreneurial rampage — raging ever-closer to workaholic status. Yes, I’m a self-employed hustler. Yes, I’m launching a business. Yes, I’m solely responsible for my professional success and career destiny. And yes — I’m exhausted.
Enter Ms. Lamarr, in her infinite wisdom.
Lamarr, with her daily bathing rituals and rare steaks and languorous sleeping patterns.
The same Lamarr who declared “I must quit marrying men who feel inferior to me!” And who also declared:
I know why most people never get rich. They put the money ahead of the job. If you just think of the job, the money will automatically follow. This never fails.
Preach, sistah!
Inspired by Hedy Lamarr, I’ve decided to take a good hard look at my “life design” and make some glamorous adjustments. This Friday, I’ll share my Lamarr-inspired Life Design. Ooh, it’s gonna be sassy.

Do you have any “lifestyle role models?” Who? And why? Bonus points if you say “Oscar Wilde” or “RuPaul.”

Dude, you totally took my RuPaul answer!!
Other than that, Josephine Baker, Grace Jones and Maya Angelou.
That is an AWESOME quote and one that deserves to be immediately promoted to ”on my wall and inside my diary” status – love!
TARA: Josephine Baker, Grace Jones and Maya Angelou are all RAD role models. Nicely done.
CORRINE: Do it! Quotes are magic.
She sounds cool! Looking forward to Friday :)
Lifestyle role models:
Bjork
Tonya Kay
Gala Darling
& many more
I’ve been loving this blog lately: http://www.elle.se/elsa-billgren.aspx
This girl is livin’ it up! Thank you google translate!
Hedy Lamarr was amazing, she was recently featured on the British Computer Society website as part of their Pioneers feature and the video about her is really quite interesting: http://pioneers.bcs.org/pioneer-profiles/hedy-lamarr
BRENNA: We share many of the same role models! I must investigate this Tonya Kay …
VIXEL: A brainy beauty with lots of snark. Ms. Lamarr may’ve lived through the Great Depression, but she was pressed from a Gen Y mold, no?
