It’s easy to get jaded. It’s difficult to trust. But a lot of people — people you know very well, people you barely know at all — want to help you. Why? People like being helpful. It makes them feel happy and useful.
Your boss wants to help you develop your professional skills. Your mom wants to help you find true love. Your BFF wants to help you remember that one time in San Bernadino when you had the Best Burger Of All Time and then saw The Dukes of Hazzard before the Nocturnal Wonderland rave. Your utility representative wants to help you manage your monthly bills. Your local S.C.O.R.E. branch wants to help you start a successful small business. Your pharmacist wants to help you understand your dosage instructions. Your favorite DJ wants to help you discover new music.
People are constantly trying to help you. And if they’re not, they’d probably be happy to … if you just ask.
Kinda awesome, huh?

If blogs had a “Like” button, I would have clicked it three times for this post.
This is adorable xx
Thanks for the reminder, Alexandra. I sometimes forget, being in NY & all. People can be so mean here, but I always say that when someone needs help – with directions or something deeper – the “strangers” in NYC always come through in a pinch. Love the thought of coming from this place.
So, so true!
ANN: Aw, shucks! I think blogs DO have a “Like” button — quite a few, actually. They go by many names: Digg, StumpleUpon, etc. But your presence is enough of a prize for me – no buttons required! :D
GINGER: Whenever you comment, I get extra-happy because I feel like the Mayor of the City of Wellington, New Zealand has personally bestowed me with a compliment. You have become an overblown figurehead in my mind! Be proud.
MICHELLE: That reminds me of a comic strip I saw years ago … it went something like: in L.A. when people say “hello” they really mean “f*ck you!” and in N.Y.C. when people say “f*ck you!” they really mean “hello.” Whereas here in the Midwest, when people say “hello” they really mean “hello.” So quaint, and utterly charming.
CARMEN: Welcome, lady! I like your blogz and artz.
I truly believe you. The walk, or run as some say, out of the home to find the lost which was called life, is a story. I landed in NY, then Oregon and finally stayed in Chicago. It was in these times and movement where people shined for me. There may have been a void in bloodline, but the world seems to continue helping push forward what may have been a beeline to the core of Earth. Instead, each smile and honest eye sparkle eased the sharp twitch of pain and filled an elevator to the heart of humanity. My one hope now, is for me to continue lifting out all the wisdom and knowledge, and help pulley those whom see the lightness and darkness of love.
