“An Education”

I recently viewed An Education at The Landmark Theater in Uptown Minneapolis. Good lord, what a gorgeous film. Peter Sarsgaard plays David, a duplicitous-but-well-meaning playboy who falls in love with Jenny — a sixteen year-old schoolgirl. Sarsgaard retains enough youthful charisma to prevent the multi-generational romance from being outright creepy, while Carey Mulligan brings both charm and complexity to her breakthrough role.

And oh, the outfits! Set in the sixties, An Education oscillates between Jenny’s grim suburban schoolyard (pleated skirts and knee-high stockings) to lavish underground jazz clubs (sequins, silk and feline eyeliner) to the cobbled streets of Paris (trench coats, ballet flats and jet-black Jackie O sunglasses).

I am officially inspired to burn all my clothing and build an all-black wardrobe … accented only with Chanel No. 5 perfume, a crisp taupe trench coat and a gold cigarette lighter. And maybe one perfectly tailored lavender dress — you know, for the greyhound races.
