There’s something magical about gay lady cafés. It’s partly the ferocious riot grrrl music they play. It’s partly the abundance of vegan / vegetarian pastries. It’s also the fact that organic soymilk doesn’t cost extra, and that “fairtrade” coffee is not an option, but rather a given.
But mostly it’s the fact that gay lady cafés generally contain lots of gay ladies. And for some reason, they are ALWAYS the nerdy / be-spectacled / thrift-shopping / eco-conscious / bike-riding ladies of which I am so very fond.
They can often be found tapping away at their heavily-decorated laptops, or (be still my beating heart!) writing in their journals. Sometimes they are even reading books. Yes, books. Not Kindles. Books.
One day (when I’m a cool person) I will casually ask the barista to send a drink accompanied by a charming note to an attractive lady of my choosing. The note will say something to the effect of: “I like your smile. Hoping this beverage persuades you to stick around so I can enjoy it a bit longer.” Or perhaps something slightly less creepy and peeping tom-ish. I’m still working on the wording.
But yeah. The ol’ “send over a drink” routine. I’m gonna do it. Someday. For realz.
